Today, why not paint a Halloween pumpkin? A painted pumpkin survive carved jack-o-lantern by months and can even be repainted for use as a Thanksgiving decoration. With a little imagination, painting pumpkin faces become a treatment of the family. My wife and I stumbled upon these pumpkin painting ideas by accident. A few years ago, we had the kids here in late September. On a whim, we decided to visit a local pumpkin patch and let them choose a couple of carved pumpkins for Halloween. The patch has a little stand set up with various fruits and vegetables for sale, with a nice supply of jams, jellies and preserves. I think that's the main reason my wife wanted to go! Displayed prominently along the rear wall of the stand were the result of the cutest painted pumpkins we had ever seen. I told my wife we had better price a couple of them on the way out. After harvesting the size of some beautiful sculptures of pumpkins we got back on the stand and knocked off our feet when the clerk told us the price of the painting pumpkins. Placard Costumes - Another quick and easy idea for kid costumes is a "placard costume" in which the child wears a hooded sweatshirt and pulls front and back cardboard panels (the placard) on over it. Shape the placard (poster board works fine) as needed for the costume desired, and design it with markers or felt pieces.

Sunflower - Yellow sweat suit. Staple craft foam flower petals end to end onto a wide ribbon and tie around child's face to make the flower. Paint the face reddish brown with black spots. Make a couple of bright green leaves from craft foam and pin side by side onto front of sweat suit.

Bunch of Grapes - Start with a purple sweat suit. Complete the look with a green knit cap with a couple of large green felt leaves attached.

Bag of Trash - Make two leg holes is a large sized trash bag.

Little Old Lady - An old house dress with torn stockings and slippers. Curlers in the hair or white wig. Glasses, blacked out tooth, old fashioned pocketbook.

Crayon - Sweat suit in the chosen color of your crayon. Design the crayon wrapper from poster board, felt pieces or craft foam and baste or pin onto the sweat suit.
Secure under child's chin with a wide strip of elastic stapled to the hat.

Static Cling - Start with sweat suit of your choice, pin on small clothing items such as socks, hats, mittens, and underwear along with a few dryer sheets.

Mummy - Tear a white sheet into strips. Paint face white and spray hair with white paint. Wrap child dressed in white long underwear with sheet strips, securing with clear medical tape, leaving eyes and mouth open.

Angel - White sweat suit with wings of tulle stretched over shaped coat hangers. Glittery headband made from wire circle covered with foil and colorful curling ribbon.

Clown - Sweat suit with colorful felt or fabric paint polka dots.. Clown collar made from felt triangles attached together in a circle to go around child's neck. Colorful clown wig, nose, and oversized glasses. Facepaint simple blue crosses over eyes, red cheeks, and large red mouth.

Make a Spider Web. All you need for this fun game is a ball of black, white, or silver yarn or string and a few kids. Ask one child to hold one end of the string and then toss the ball to another kid.

Mummy Contest. Grab a few rolls of toilet paper and match the kids up in pairs. Then - you guessed it - have one of the children wrap the toilet paper around the other, creating a mummy. For the first, the team that has a completely wrapped mummy first wins.

Eyeball Race. Start with a plain ping-pong ball for each child. Use a Sharpie marker and draw on it to turn it into an eyeball. Give each child a spoon and drop one of the eyeballs in each spoon. Now it's time to race. The child that reaches the finish line with the eyeball in the spoon first wins.

It is extremely practical, and you do not suffer more than bricks and mortar battle scars!

I was surprised at the selection of all the ideas available online for costumes, and it made my decision process very simple!
